Summary :
Promoting the practice of sport and physical activities among population is a public health issue in which occupational therapy can be positioned. Indeed, as a specialist in human activity, occupational therapists have the legitimacy to invest in this field. The occupational perspective offered by occupational science can support occupational therapy’s use of sport and physical activity as a treatment modality or goal, toward an occupation-centred and occupation-based practice.
This study therefore proposes to conduct a review of occupational science literature to determine how sport and physical activity is addressed. The aim is to support the practices of interested occupational therapists, or ones who aim to develop interventions that integrate sport and physical activity. 10 studies were selected in the literature review. Most of the articles explore the occupational engagement in sport and physical activities, whether of children, adults, or older people. Other articles focus on occupational balance as well as social inclusion in a transactional perspective. All of these articles show that sport and physical activity is a vehicle for occupational engagement and contributes positively to individuals’ occupational balance and social inclusion. Although this topic is still little addressed in occupational science literature and connections with occupational therapy are still scattered, this study shows that occupational therapists can rely on occupational sciences to highlight the relevance and complementarity of their interventions with other disciplines that invest in sport and physical activity.
